Safety Measures for a Pool with Children at Home

Caves Heights, The Bahamas

The responsibilities of having a pool on your property while maintaining safety for your children are endless. Summer fun outside with family and friends is the best around water, however preventing accidents from happening should be a priority for parents and guardians, considering tragedies surrounding unsupervised toddlers. Below are a few pool safety tips that should help ensure a safe environment for the kids to enjoy summer days.

  • Fencing

Ensure the pool has an effective yet accessible barrier to help guard against unauthorised or unaccompanied entry by children. In the same breath, latches or locks used to close the barriers should be out of reach for toddlers.

  • Ensure Supervision

Children should never be left alone near a pool, river, beach etc. Drowning incidents occur, even if the victim is an accomplished swimmer. It would be advantageous if the guardian in charge knows basic CPR and first aid.

  • Pool Maintenance

Make sure the pool installation is user-friendly, well maintained and serviced annually or however often you are advised by a professional. The same goes for pool safety tools. These should not be used as toys but should be kept in safe proximity and used for their purpose only.

  • Swimming Lessons

Enrol your toddler in after-school swimming lessons. Being able to swim does not cancel out the risk of drowning; however, it does decrease the chances.

  • Keep the Pool Covered

If possible, invest in a secure pool cover that will be used for days when your pool is not in use.

You can never be too cautious when it comes to safety. Keep local emergency medical contacts visible in your home with a working telephone or mobile phone handy. Remember that anything can happen. It takes a second of looking away for an incident to occur, so practice vigilance at all times with toddlers around.
